Fun with words and sentences in 4MR

This week, some children in 4MR were given the opportunity to explore words and build sentences using a variety of games. They loved learning new spellings of words and also sharing top tips with their friends.
A lot of laughter was heard when building sentences too!

4MR Freya's incredible story writing!

Year 4 are currently being taught how to write African stories in English and have made an incredible start!

Freya's story writing has blown us away with her descriptive language and important theme.

Here is the first half of the story. We can't wait to see how the story develops and ends!

It was a scorching hot day in the grasslands of Africa. The trees were lifeless, offering no shade to the poor animals. Some just strong enough for the smallest of birds to perch on. An enormous elephant stomped by. His skin as dry as a rock. Elephant had two enormous ears, four plump, stubby legs and a small, boring nose.
Poor Elephant got bullied by all the other animals for having such a stubby nose. "Look at my magnificent beak," squawked Vulture. 
"Look at my velvety nose," declared Zebra.
Elephant was never allowed to join in with their games. One day, Elephant decided he'd had enough of their mean ways. He was going to prove to them that he was to be treated equally. 
He strode into the middle of the savanna to see all the animals lying on the floor, craving water. He had decided what he was going to do. "I'm going to search for water. When I'm back, you will all be begging me for a drop!" he declared. The animals laughed with all the energy they had left. When Elephant had gone, they whispered and chatted about how silly Elephant was.
Elephant had started his journey when he thought he heard some mysterious cackling. He thought it was just him remembering the animals laughing at his nose. Then it got louder. Elephant grew scared. Turn back or keep going - what will Elephant do?

Roman Oil Lamp tutorials in 4MR!

After making Roman oil lamps, writing instructions on how to make them and then editing them to 'incredible' level, the children in 4MR wanted to make video tutorials... so they did!

One of the videos will be uploaded to the school's YouTube page - stay tuned!

Peer editing in 4MR

This week, the children in Year 4 made Roman oil lamps and then wrote some fantastic instructions on how to make them.

Today, in 4MR, the children worked in pairs to peer edit their work. They were set a mission. It was to turn the standard of their instructions from fantastic to incredible! It was lovely to see the children giving top tips to each other and then acting on the feedback.

More story writing in 4MR!

Children in 4MR have loved seeing their work shared on the blog and have asked to share more!

Over the past week, the children have been writing their own imaginary stories set in the Stone Age. This work was completely independent and gave the children the chance to apply the skills and sentences they had learnt to their own story.

Poppy used word banks to extend her range of vocabulary - great work!

Oliver included lots of detail and description in his writing. What a lovely read!

Izzie loved writing her story and was eager to share it on the blog - amazing!

 Charlie applied the range of exciting sentences he has learnt to his story. It was a gripping read!

4MR imaginary world stories

For the past two weeks, children in Year 4 have been learning how to write stories set in imaginary worlds. They have learnt how to paragraph, use exciting vocabulary and describe the five senses of a character.
The children have also learnt how to construct and apply 2A sentences, one pair sentences and choice-question sentences. Amazing!

We have loved watching the children write so enthusiastically and express their creativity within their writing. We even had children asking to stay in at break times to continue writing!

The Life Cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly

This half term, Year Four have been inspired by the life cycle of the Painted Lady butterfly. The children researched scientific facts about each stage of the life cycle and wrote explanation texts to share their findings. Below are the first drafts of work from children in 4MR. Fantastic knowledge! 

 

#HomeForChristmas: Coming Home by Michael Morpurgo

We've begun some work linked to 'Coming Home' by Michael Morpurgo.

Here's what 4CY did on their first day studying the book:

Words to describe what 'home' is like. These were written before we read the book.

After the book had been read, the children chose words to describe the robin's journey.
 

In less than 140 characters, the children wrote a review of the story.

The book was good because it has a happy ending. Also, I like animals. It is well written and good to listen to. It was good. Mattis

The book was amazing. I really liked it because it was full of action and was very exciting. You did not know what was going to happen next! Adam

The book was great because I liked the ending, but I didn’t like the scary bits.

I like the book because the author used a lot of detail and punctuation. It is a joy to read. Freddie
